“THEN and NOW”

Being a Gearhead for most of my life and privileged to have grown-up in the shadow of the heyday of 60’s and 70’s muscle cars being pumped out by Detroit at the time, I would wish for the chance to plant my right foot on the accelerator of a 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT for Valentine’s Day.

This my wish because back in the day, back ‘then’ when cars looked good and ran great I owned a Sunfire Yellow 1969 Dodge Charger with a 383 Magnum coupled to a 727 Torqueflight tranny. It was circa 1975 and I had just graduated high school and that car was my BABY. With Creedence Clear Water Revival playing in a Craig 8-Track player, life was so carefree.

My first exposure to a Dodge Challenger happened one night when a bunch of my buddies and I saw the movie Vanishing Point, the icon, cult car movie starring Barry Newman as Kowalski driving the star of the show; a white 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T. We were blown away by the style, performance and awesome drivability. After the show, I announced that someday I would own one of those machines.

Fast forward to 1998 and I had just returned from a six-month deployment to Haiti compliments of Uncle Sam. With some coin to jingle, I attended Nevada’s Hot August Night car show and stumbled upon a real 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with a “U” code 440 Magnum, Pistol Grip handled 4-speed, and painted Rally Red that screamed “Buy Me! Greenbacks were exchanged and with only 27,000 original miles showing on the odometer, it was a time piece that began a long love affair with one of today’s ultimate collector muscle cars. Alas, the old gal is 40 years old now and although a blast from the past to drive, it is just not practical to drive and leave in some forlorn parking lot during a weekend jaunt.

‘Now’ the Dodge Challenger is back! Sporting many retro body lines familiar with the original Challenger and powered by the world famous Hemi, I am itching for a new experience. Just back from a year long deployment to the ‘sandbox,’ again compliments of Uncle Sam and with some coin to jingle, my girlfriend and I would love to spend a Valentine’s Day night on the town with a new Dodge Challenger SRT. Albeit, this new Challenger would be much younger with improved moves than the ol’ gal who safely resides in my garage. The opportunity to spend 24 hours with a new Challenger SRT would bring full circle what started over 35 years ago and make for a really cool Valentine’s Day outing with my girl.

In the summer of 1974 I was 21. I had worked for three summers while attending college to save enough money for a down payment on my first new car. Ever since high school I knew what my dream car was; either a Plymouth Cuda or a Dodge Challenger. What I didn't plan on was that Chrysler would discontinue both cars after the 1974 model year.
When I got the bad news, I scrambled to find any dealer with a Cuda or Challenger. Normadin Chrysler Plymouth had a red Cuda with a 440 motor. Bad news was that it was slightly damaged coming off the transporter, and Chrysler now owned the Cuda. It wasn't for sale.
At a Dodge dealer, I found a white Challenger R/T 340 with black stripes on the sides and a pistol grip 4 speed. The salesman informed me that it was spoken for in a dealer trade. When he saw my disappointment,he must have felt sorry for me and he let me take it for a test drive. Wow!
Fast forward 36 years. A family and two dogs makes a minivan our most practical transportation. We've owned four minivans produced by Chrysler and they are great. But whenever I see a Challenger R/T, I think of that day in 1974 when I stepped on the accelerator and was shoved back into the driver's seat.
I would like to drive a Challenger R/T for Valentine's Day. I would take my son for a ride (he doesn't have a drivers license) and maybe the experience would build a lasting memory for him too.

My fantasy ride for Valentine's Day is definitely the 2010 Chrysler 300C. I drove one for my neices prom back in 2005 and I fell in love with it instantly. I was the driver for the prom, but I felt like I was the PRINCESS for the night. The ride was absolutely beautiful. I haven't made enough money to buy one yet, but being able to drive this on Sweetheart's day would be beautiful. Thank you for the opportunity..Tamara Flowers
